5 Reasons Every Young Athlete Should Strength Train
TIMES HAVE CHANGED FOR THE ATHLETE…
The traditional model of focusing on your sport to become a better athlete just doesn’t cut it. Research has shown and proven, that in order for athletes to become better at their sport, they must become well rounded in other capacities. Strength training has proven time and time again, to be a significant addition to any athlete for the following reasons:
1. IMPROVEMENT OF OVERALL HEALTH & FITNESS
Exercise, strength training to be specific, helps with weight loss, and maintaining weight loss. It builds strength, and helps protect bone density health, and muscle mass.
2. HELPS ATHLETES PREPARE FOR THEIR SPORT
Regardless of what sport an athlete plays, strength training helps by building muscle, helping athletes become stronger and in overall better shape. As an athlete works on proper technique in strength training, they are training their body to move properly, which creates muscle memory that translates in many other domains, one being their sport. They become more agile and consistent with their movement, which leads them to better performance in their sport!
3. INJURY PREVENTION
Strength training builds that protective barrier to potential injury by helping athletes literally build muscles and strength. This protects tendons, ligaments, and bones, that may otherwise, with repeated movement (sport focused), become weak and tear, creating many potential long term problems. Repetitive movement in a sport, such as baseball or football, (throwing), can cause overuse issues. Strength training can provide overall strength to the surrounding tissues that work so hard in consistent repetition, providing balance.
4. INCREASES OVERALL CONFIDENCE & SELF ESTEEM
It’s a fact, when you physically feel strong, you mentally feel stronger as well. As we get stronger, and our understanding of how are bodies are to move, we increase our confidence in what we are and can do. The results translate into everyday life, home or an athletes sport.
5. ITS FUN!
It’s true! Being able to lift, become more confident with lifts, and how our bodies are supposed to move is incredibly rewarding and FUN! Constantly seeing physical changes ascetically, and watching the strength increase equals results for our minds, and it keeps us coming back for more!
